W.A.N. - WORKED ALL NOBELS

The A.R.I. Gorizia Amateur Radio Club is proud to propose the permanent W.A.N. Award - Worked All Nobels. Its aim is to spread names and knowledge of all the Nobel laureates.

Looking through the various Nobel laureates, spreaded all around the World to testify that the genius does not have boundaries, we run across one century history, perhaps the most important for mankind, and in this way stepping over the various Awards is a cultural thing more than a little tribute to these persons who certainly deserve our gratitude.

  1. Award

The Award consists in a gold-over-black polycarbonate print representing the Fourteenth-Century Seal of the city of Gorizia, visibile on the official site on www.arigorizia.org.

  1. Award organization

The Award is promoted by tha A.R.I. Gorizia Amateur Radio Club, P.O. BOX 5 – 34170 Gorizia - ITALY.

The Award manager is referenced into the Amateur Radio Club which promotes the Award (Awardmanager@arigorizia.org).

  1. Aim

The aim of this Award is to contact/hear fixed amateur stations placed in the native towns of the Nobel laureates. Partecipation is opened to every OM and SWL. Different scores are provided basing on the contact precision, that is the closeness of the contacted town regarding to the city of birth of a Nobel laureate. In the event a Nobel Prize has been given to an organization, the city to where the organization keeps its headquarters counts as the target.

  1. Bands and modes

QSOs/Heards on every amateur band are valid, including WARC and with every emission mode, QSOs/heards with portable/mobile/maritime stations are not considered as valid, as well as contacts made in cross-mode, echo-link, via terrestrial repeaters or via the Internet.

Only contacts/heards with stations in possess of regular authorization and in the respect of their limits will be considered valid, starting from 25th of April 1945.

  1. Points

The score will take into considerations the ‘precision’ of the contacts, and precisely:

  • 1 point for contacting the Country (Country DXCC)

  • 5 points for contacting the call area (region, land, county, department, oblast, federal state)

  • 10 points for contacting the native town of a Nobel laureate

  • 20 points for contacting the jolly station IQ3GO (valid for all Nobel prizes)

  • 50 points for contacting an amateur radio Nobel laureate

Will be accredited only three contacts for every Nobel laureate, split into:

  1. born city of a Nobel laureate

  2. region, land, county, department, oblast, federal state

  3. country (country DXCC):

The points collected contacting jolly stations are cumulative, but only one contact will be considered valid for each Nobel category.

Periodically or in occasion of particular events and at the discretion of the organization, localities or jolly calls will be activated to increment the score for easily reach the Award.

  1. Award

The Award will be issued, on request, for one of the Nobel prize category (Peace, Literature, Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Economy), by reaching the minimum scores and for one of the following modes:


  • Mixed 500 points Endorsement (Stickers) + 250;

  • CW 300 points Endorsement (Stickers) + 150;

  • SSB 400 points Endorsement (Stickers) + 200;

  • RTTY and digital modes 300 points Endorsement (Stickers) + 150;

  • Satellite (EME) 100 points Endorsement (Stickers) + 50;

  • SWL 500 points Endorsement (Stickers) + 250.

Here follows some calculation examples for the Nobel prize Physics:

Contacting an OM from the city of Gorizia (native town) 10 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Trieste (region Friuli V.G.) 5 points Partial: 16 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Roma (country) 1 point

Nobel Albert EINSTEIN

Contacting the jolly station IQ3GO 20 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Ulm (native town) 10 points

Contacting a second OM from the city of Ulm (land Baden-W.) 5 points Partial: 36 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Berlin (country) 1 point

Nobel Joseph H. Taylor - K1JT Joe

Contacting Joe Taylor K1JT (Nobel laureate) 50 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Philadelphia native town) 10 points Partial: 66 points

Contacting an OM from Pennsylvania (stato federale) 5 points

Contacting an OM from the city of New York (country) 1 point

Nobel Guglielmo MARCONI

Contacting an OM from the city of Bologna (native town) 10 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Parma (region Emilia–Romagna) 5 points Partial: 16 points

Contacting an OM from the city of Gorizia (country) 1 point

The sum of the points gained for the Nobel prize chosen (physics in our example), gives the actual score to achieve the Award: 16 + 36 + 66 +16 = 134 points.

  1. Top Ten, Honor Roll, Top Honor Roll

Top Ten charts will be periodically published for every category. To gain access to the Honor-Roll you have to obtain all the six Nobel Awards for any of the modes listed. If desired it’s possible to request the special plate to the Award manager. The Honor-Roll who at least contacts 500 Nobel prizes will access the Top Honor-Roll.

8. Award request and information

The Award has to be requested to the Award Manager, at the organization Club, by sending the request module (www.arigorizia.org/wan/form) together with the signed log excerpt, in Excel, DBF, CBR or ADIF format, via e-mail (Awardmanager@arigorizia.org), or through the postal service (it’s ok on floppy-disk or CD). Sending the QSL cards it’s not necessary, however the Award Manager can request their photocopies or scan to check the QSOs/Heards. Every faked or altered confirm will cause the unsuccessful issuing and the immediate exclusion from this Award.

Every objection will be solved by the Award Manager and any amount of money sent back deducting the cost for the return.

For the Award issuing a money contribution of 10 EUR is requested, and 3 EUR for the Endorsements (stickers). Further information via e mail (Awardmanager@arigorizia.org) or via postal service by sending a preaddressed evenlope (SASE). You will always find all the information about the W.A.N. Award, the upgrades, modules, applications and the list of all the issued Awards on the official website http://www.arigorizia.org/wan. The ones who don’t want to appear in the list must explicitly ask it while requesting the Award.
